Over Christmas break, the girls’ basketball team slammed the competition in both tournaments they attended.
“We played the number two team [Blount] in the state and we played the number four team [Mountain Brook] in the state. We played the returning state champion and currently number one ranked team in Georgia St.Frances so we played some really good competition,” Coach Patrick Delay said.
In the Wills Valley Shootout, the team beat Mt. Brook 52-39, South Forsythe GA 52-45 and Fort Payne 54-28. The second tournament was the Balls N Powher Prep Invite and the team beat Blount 52-39, Jeff Davis 69-41, St.Frances 56-47 and Madison Academy 45-30.
“We have goals we try to reach every game and so before we run out there we say okay we got these goals we need to work on and try to accomplish,” senior Morgan Caselberry said.
According to Delay the girls have improved in some skills since last year. Now that they are ranked number one in the state and 23 in the nation he expects the same out of them whether or not they are ranked.
“He pushes us to work harder and we’ve learned to motivate each other the whole time especially when someone is down we try to pick them back up,” junior Chelsea Robinson said.
According to Caselberry, the teammates have known each other for a long time and that has played a role in finding out what one another’s weaknesses and strengths are.
“We still got a long way to go and a lot of work to do. We’re not at our full potential yet but we’re getting there. It should be a great season and hopefully it will end great. We feelin it this year and we feel like we’re going to make it to Birmingham,” junior Chelsea Robinson said.
