The ball goes in and the crowd goes wild. The thunderous applause is heard across the school. No, it’s not the state championship. It may be better than that. It’s the SLC basketball team taking on another opponent.
In a time when school spirit at sporting events has been at a low, it is great to see a huge turnout for these games that take place during the second block. The tickets, sold for $2, seem to be a hot commodity with students counting their pennies to purchase a chance to see this team in action.
The team has faced some tough opponents with various heights and skills, but the crowd has cheered them on the entire way through every challenge.
As a viewer of these games myself, I have watched the crowd go from a small student section at the first game, to a large enthusiastic crowd that covers the entirety of the gym’s bleachers. Even at the first few games, there was a school spirit like no other–it was loud, cheerful, and full of energy. During halftime, the crowd never failed to show their enthusiasm and love towards the songs that played over the speakers. This also helped the basketball team earn a sense of confidence in the final parts of the game. Although they have a current record of 3-3, the players have persevered and played through the challenges with great determination.
The school spirit during these basketball games is through the roof. There is never a quiet moment in the gym. It is so loud that it can be heard throughout the school. If you have not yet joined the games, I suggest you catch the next one on Tuesday, March 5th. You will be able to be a part of something bigger than yourself. As I watch these games, I am inspired by the ability of these students and their supporters. It shows how a little bit of energy and encouragement can have a big effect on the outcome of a challenge. I am truly inspired by the ability of these students and their ability to uplift one another and help each other succeed. These basketball games are an amazing way to spend your second block. The next time you have $2, you should join the excitement and fun of watching these students play.
