Tackle Tuesday: Should Higher Education be Free

Melly: Yes

Higher forms of education such as college are the hands that mold the base of our society so why not make college widely available? Higher education not only ensures more effective problem solving within a society but allows people of all backgrounds to come together to solve common problems. In addition to the collective, individuals as a whole would improve from a more widely available education because it allows people with humble beginnings to gain financial stability for themselves as well as their families. This will increase overall societal cooperation and decrease crime rates. Having free education isn’t a crazy new idea, Australia has both free higher education as well as free healthcare and it is considered the 12th happiest country in the world. Limiting ourselves by the constraints of cost only increases conflict and undermines the foundation of what is supposed to be an equal and fair nation.

Enoch: No

Due to the laws of supply and demand, if something is in very short supply but the demand for it is quite high it will be quite expensive. In a way, higher education is the same way. There is a quite limited supply but it seems so many want a simple piece of paper that comes with a wealth of knowledge that you could probably learn online at this point. Higher education should not be free due to its very natural in purpose to educate to a higher degree than just any old school meaning not everyone is supposed to have it, that limiting factor being a paywall. Now although I do believe it shouldn’t be free does not mean that I am content with its current price. Too high, unpayable and frankly not worth it. All of this is not to say people in lower classes should not be able to be paid a livable wage, apprenticeships in which you usually learn while you work.
