Violence can appear in a lot of things, such as movies, social groups, and especially in video games. These things could affect the way some people think or act, but can a video game really affect someone’s way of being?
The game Call of Duty has been popular among teenagers since it came out in 2003, largely due to its being a military first-person shooter. Two Sparkman senators gave their opinion about this game, and whether they think Call of Duty could create violent people.
“I like this video game because I can do cosmetic changes to customize the weapons’ appearances and in my opinion, this game doesn’t change the way I think or act because I just see the game as what it is. Just a game. And I think the only way it could affect someone is if they take the game seriously and instead of having fun, they just stress over it,” freshman Christian Garcia-Fernandez said.
For some people, Call of Duty it’s just a game where they can have fun and spend time with their friends. The senators said that this video game, in particular, or any kind of video game, can’t change the way they act or express themselves towards others. They said it’s just a way for them to entertain themselves outside of school, and it’s something they enjoy doing.
“This game to me doesn’t bring that much of an impact mentally. I just like this game because I get to make fun of my friends every time I win. Also, I don’t think this kind of video game could affect others, because most people have common sense and they know how to act towards others,” junior Evan Draper said.
These interviews revealed that the video game Call of Duty doesn’t seem to make the students more violent or have any influential meaning to them. This also showed that people can separate real life from video games, without letting games affect their way of thinking or acting. Overall, Call of Duty seems to be just a form of entertainment that most people like because it’s fun and relaxing to play with their friends. It doesn’t influence how people act unless they choose to do any actions based on what they are playing in the game. As long as the players know the difference between fiction and reality, this game can be harmless with the right mindset.
