Local attractions during winter

When the climate catches the cold winter air, many believe there is nothing to do, but Huntsville is a large city filled with various activities that one can attend during the winter.

Finding the right activity during the winter is not as hard as some might think. There are various winter attractions open to the public less than thirty minutes away, many indoors to keep one away from the crispy air.

Shopping centers and malls, such as Parkway Place and Madison Square, can keep many people occupied during winter.  For people who like a more varied shopping center and are willing to brave the cold, there is Bridgestreet, an outdoor mall that has top of the line clothing and accessories. As for people who enjoy games and fun activities, there are bowling allies, roller rinks and ice-skating rinks, including the Huntsville Museum of Art’s outdoor skating rink at Big Spring Park, open from Nov. 21 to Jan. 5.

An hour and a half away from Harvest, Gadsden is hosting “Let it Snow,” an indoor winter wonderland at Mary G. Hardin’s Center for Cultural Arts and the Imagination Place Children’s Museum.  They will be transforming the Chan Gallery into this winter wonderland until Jan. 31, with the annual Festival of Trees, where more than 30 decorated Christmas trees will be displayed.

Another event transpiring in Huntsville is “American Beauty: Selections from the Wiginton Collection,” taking place Oct. 19, 2013 to Jan. 19, 2014. The Huntsville Museum of Art will have a collection of artists, including John Singer Sargent, Theodore Robinson and William Glackens, to show their realistic artworks and the different skills they have learned.

The Von Braun Center may also hold various events during winter-from hockey games to wrestling matches. They have plenty of activities to keep one warm while allowing families to spend time together.
