For the first time in eight years, biology teacher Leslie Machen heading up another club. Chemistry club and physics club is now joined by Biology club.

The first meeting will take place today after school in the S9 auditorium. Machen is expecting a large turnout due to the two weeks of advertising and the avid interest from her current and former students.

“It’s not going to be very active this first semester. Next year we will be more involved in various communities,” Machen said. “I’m going to let the students decide if there’s an organization that they would like to sponsor and volunteer at.”

Along with the question of who to sponsor, the first meeting will include a guest speaker — Adler Salem, a junior with a beekeeping hobby, and hopefully a large group of students.

“I’d like to do something with Hudson Alpha whether they come here or we go and tour their facility. I’m going to have them give me suggestions as to what they want to do as a biology club,” Machen said.

Unlike other clubs, the ninth graders will be included, per requests of S9 Principal Martin Hester.

“I hope it’s one of the best clubs of the school and everyone wants to be a part of it,” Machen said.
