Here, senior Dominque Satterwhite is conveying her plans for the Debate team.

While most seniors are enjoying their last year of high school, one senior in particular wishes to start something that will create an impact years after she is gone. In an attempt to bring back to life the spirit of the debate team from year’s past, Senior Dominique Satterwhite is in the process of creating bylaws for a debate team and is looking for some help.
“Principal Askew encouraged me to go out there and get this started, so I am looking for a history teacher, or any teacher, as a sponsor that would be really into it,” Satterwhite said.

Debate team is an organization where students learn essential social and public speaking skills for the future. Satterwhite believes students should stay up to date with all of the latest politics and news.

“I really think it’s a good way for students to have a voice in the school and talk about some of the political issues in the news today,” Satterwhite said ”We need to be discussing these things because when we go out into the world we are going to have to have public speaking skills and have some sort of idea about what is going on out there in the world.”

The debate team would run in the school for now, and Satterwhite is looking to branch out and compete. She adds that the club will be set up like a typical debate team.

“It’s a platform for kids to discuss issues and news, so we are going to come up with proposals for each side and then each team would be assigned a side of the issue and you have to fight for that,” Satterwhite said.

Satterwhite is planning to go into a career in political science and believes that debate team will build the necessary skills to do so.

“Kids nowadays don’t talk about what’s going on. They just see what they see on the internet, or CNN, or something on their phones, but they don’t have a great idea of what’s going on,” Satterwhite said “They need to be able to speak for themselves and have some sort of knowledge about things in the media. Students need to have opinions about things.”
