Service is an important part of the community. It provides support for people struggling to get the help they need, while also getting people more involved. So why aren’t more people volunteering in their community?
There are plenty of benefits to helping within the community. It can help with personal growth, volunteer hours, becoming more extroverted and can be a way to spread kindness to those around you. That being said, most people don’t jump on opportunities to help their community, largely due to their lack of free time or just not knowing where to start.
“Volunteering can provide a healthy boost to your self-confidence, self-esteem and life satisfaction. You are doing good for others and the community, which provides a natural sense of accomplishment. Your role as a volunteer can also give you a sense of pride and identity. And the better you feel about yourself, the more likely you are to have a positive view of your life and future goals.” Western Connecticut State University published on its website.
Community service brings friends and families together to help address certain needs within the community. There are multiple ways to help the community without guidance. If you have extra canned goods or just food in general that you don’t need, you can always donate to a food bank and help feed families who aren’t as fortunate. Even something as small as picking up trash you see lying around can help keep your community clean.
Volunteering for upcoming events or gatherings in your city is another way you can help. If the event needs more volunteers, people can take on those roles and do simple tasks such as picking up trash, face painting or other fun duties.
During the holidays, people can volunteer at local homeless shelters and help serve Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. There are trunk-or-treats during Halloween to help bring the community together and bring more social bonding in the community.
According to Rocket City Mom, you can help in a variety of ways, including sponsoring a wish list, adopting an ornament, donating individual items, donating money or volunteering at wrapping stations.
There are ways to keep up with volunteer opportunities, like attending local PTA meetings or school-board meetings, or even online social media groups within the
community. If more people volunteer within their communities, it can help inspire others to do the same for their neighborhoods.
