For decades, older men and women have dominated government and other important official roles, all while using that power to make big decisions for the country’s younger generation.

Although some government officials have helped the younger generations throughout the last couple of decades, it can be overwhelming knowing that young adults and teenagers don’t really have a say in laws made for them.

Having old people in government can lead to “gerontocracy”, which means being ruled by the elderly. Having a disproportionate number of elders in our government can lead to biased opinions based on past ideas and beliefs.

There have been many cases where the men and women in government have made laws for the newer generation, like the new phone law in Alabama. The phone law establishes that students are prohibited from using their devices on campus during school hours, and if they do so, they can be disciplined all the way up to out-of-school suspension.

It can be hard to feel connected to what the government is saying due to the lack of guidance and different beliefs. Most of the younger generation are stuck in the middle when it comes to choosing between parties and beliefs, since so many officials have opinions that don’t align with Gen Z and millennials’ more “woke” opinions.

It feels as though officials are in those roles because they come from families that already have high status and large net worths. It can feel like members of Congress are only here to grow their income, rather than actually helping the country.

Protests are happening much more than they used to due to the changes and decisions the government keeps making. According to the Harvard Kennedy School, many Gen Z protests have rallied against corruption.

Although there are many cons and different opinions out there, having some older people in official roles can be beneficial. According to the BBC, there are some aspects where older brains actually show better performance. They have created a decently stable foundation and ability for knowledge transfer in the last couple of decades.

It can get annoying knowing that some of the younger generations in America never really get a voice on ideas and laws made to control them. Most older officials believe they are right and others are wrong just because of their age.
