Surf’s up, temperature’s down

Boredom just took a right hook to the kisser with the annual rebirth of ice surfing, a sport only seen in winter time.
People wanted to get out of their lazy funk and start moving, so some winter-crazed person combined wind surfing and ice skating to form this athletic hodgepodge. It is amazing what people think of just to entertain themselves in the harsh cold with the sloth-inducing temperatures as their motivation.
Ice surfing is not like typical winter activities; its main equipment includes a wind sail attached to a small board with either wheels or ice skate blades instead of the crowd-pleasing packed balls of snow. Some even use skis as an alternative to the board and a wind sail. With only the breeze as propulsion, the rider can reach speeds of up to 90 mph. The daredevil steering the contraption constantly has to try to not be the daredevil flying the contraption.
Like all oddball sports, it has to have an oddball sporting event. Wisconsin is hosting the World Ice and Snow Sailing 2015 Championships, and the “World” on the label is legitimate. The events website even has a countdown clock, accurate to the second.
So, we have learned how effective humans can be at making something out of nothing and transforming it into something that matters. Every idea has the potential to be a good one, it seems, and if even one person is wild about that idea, something has been accomplished.
