The Black Keys have released their first album since El Camino in 2011. This album is titled Turn Blue. The album has the two-man band’s typical sound with a relatively slow pace throughout.

The album starts off with the strongest song of the album, “Weight of Love.” It provides exactly what is expected from the band with Pink Floyd like sections of the song. If nothing else, listen to this new song.

Tracks two and three are lesser than the first, with “In Time” being not very memorable. The album’s title song has a nice beat, and if nothing else, embodies the music from The Black Keys that we all know and love.

“Fever” becomes the one song on the album I find myself skipping after the first minute or so. It constantly repeats and is even annoying as background music. This is the weakest song of the album.

Tracks five through six are great for playing while completing late night projects to keep you motivated. Just do not let these songs be the only thing you are paying attention to or you will be bored quickly. It is disappointing to see a large chunk of the album be uninteresting.

Another song pops up after this and finally catches the listener’s attention. “It’s Up To You Now” provides a break in the repetitiveness most songs on this album have with a fantastic guitar part. After enduring the last few tracks, this one is a gem.

The album ends with a song that makes you check to see if you are still listening to The Black Keys. “Gotta Get Away” is different from anything I have heard from the band. Although not my favorite, I guess it is good to try something new sometimes.

Overall, Turn Blue was slightly unsatisfactory. Compared to their other albums, this is a letdown with only one real enjoyable song at the start and a few decent ones here and there. I expected more from The Black Keys.
