Crimson Crier participates in local PSA competition

The Crimson Crier was recently challenged by The Leadership of Huntsville to create a public service announcement. They hand-picked three different local high schools — Sparkman, Lee and Bob Jones — to take on the project. The Leadership of Huntsville provided three different categories for students to choose from: public education, law enforcement and community. The Crimson Crier took on all three.

“The responsibility of producing all three categories, instead of just one is a lot of pressure, but we tend to work better under pressure due to the experience we have acquired in newspaper with having strict deadlines and quick turnarounds,” junior, Social Media Editor, Emily Baucum said.

The advisors of the project will pick the best filmed PSA to air on local news station WHNT 19. This is a rare opportunity for the students of the Crimson Crier to show their news capturing abilities.

“The possibility of being on local television is completely mind boggling. As for the opportunity that we have been given, I am excited to be a part of the experience,” senior, Opinion Editor, McKenzie Ashmore said.

The students sat down and brainstormed the outlines of the three different PSAs, making sure to get all the ideas in. They had special permission from local schools and police officers to film them and come into their daily lives to make the videos personal and moving.

“It is really a huge honor to do this with my Crimson Crier family. To make a difference by changing the status quo locally is a great contribution to my community,” Baucum said.
