SGA hosts canned food drive, helps community

December 7, 2015

Every year, SGA sponsors on a canned food drive in order to collect food for Christmas Charities Year Round in the Huntsville area.

This year the school has impressed SGA by collecting the most cans they have in recent years.

“We collected a total of 4553 cans, and in the recent past years, that is the most we have collected by almost double,” SGA sponsor Ashley Johnston said.

The amount of cans collected has been steadily increasing for years, but this year saw a significant increase in cans collected due to held a “Student vs Faculty” basketball game held to get more students involved.

“I think [we did better this year] because we had the student/faculty basketball game, in which students had to bring [two] cans to attend. That boosted the amount that we collected,” Johnston said.

Although it took time for the canned food drive to take off, SGA was happy with the 4,000 plus cans collected this year and expect nothing less for the 2016-2017 year.

“I think we did pretty well. It took us a while to get people into bringing cans because everybody kept forgetting [to bring cans], but once we starting going with it and people were bringing [cans], like the student/faculty game,” SGA Vice President Dominique Satterwhite. “Everybody brought some because everybody wanted to go. It was a good and fun way to get everybody involved in community service. I think we can do better next year, but this year we did good.”

SGA was hoping that having a class contest would encourage students to bring more cans, and the school followed that challenge by exceeding Johnston’s expectations.

“Mrs. Dalton was first place, Mrs. Hodge was second place and Mrs. Holland was third place,” Johnston said. “I think it is awesome. My goal was 4000 and that was the challenge that we gave the school, and we surpassed that by almost 600 cans.”
