A view of visitors jumping at the Hippie Hole

The heat has been intense over the last few weeks and because of it, students have been looking for fun and adventurous summer hang-out spots to cool off. This is what led so many of them to the Hippie Hole.

If you drive about two hours south from Huntsville, you will come upon the small town of Fort Payne. The Hippie Hole is a swimming hole that is a branch of Little River Canyon. People from surrounding states, such as Georgia and Tennessee, come to enjoy the natural beauty of the canyon and meet new people. From the look of the old buildings and rundown shops, you would think that locals have to go a long way to find any fun, but there is more than what meets the eye.

Junior Alysiah Price went to the Hippie Hole on one of her last days of summer vacation to hang out with her close friends.

“Some friends of mine told me about it and I decided I needed to experience it for myself,” Price said. “The best part was jumping off of a 40 foot cliff.”

Junior Stephen Sallas also made the trip to Fort Payne to find a cure his summer boredom.

“The road trip there and back was fun and so was the thrill of jumping off the cliffs. Having a good time with my friends was the most memorable part,” Sallas said. “Everyone should definitely go because it’s exciting and there’s nothing like it around here.”
