The boys’ basketball team took to the court last night in their first game of the season.

Led by senior Jacobi Godwin with 24 points, the team defeated 6A Hazel Green Trojans, 76-62. The team was up by 26 points during the third quarter, following Godwin’s three consecutive 3-pointers.

“I just had to get the feel of the shot and get my foot work right,” Godwin said. “It pumped us all up and helped us win the run.”

The first game allowed the team to work on chemistry and experimenting with line-ups. New varsity players including, along with Godwin, juniors Nick Sawyer and DJ Holt and senior transfer Jayron James took to the hardwood for the first time.

“I was proud of how the team played at Hazel Green, especially the new guys,” head coach Jamie Coggins said. “We were able to get some guys in to allow them to gain some valuable playing experience. The season is a long one and we have a lot of growing to do.”

The team will travel to Buckhorn Thursday, Nov. 15, ending the team’s first road-stretch of the season. Varsity games begin at 6 p.m. with girl’s action.
