Carmin Rice was a Homecoming court finalist. She is a senior at Sparkman High School and was crowned Homecoming Queen. Rice said, “I made a flyer and sent it to everyone, and also, I was getting to know everyone in the school to get more votes.”

Homecoming court is a big deal for high school students. People run for it out of the desire to be a part of their school, to walk the field, be crowned, have fame or be a part of the fun. The Student Government Association(SGA) is what makes homecoming week special. They uphold the traditions every year and provide things for staff and students to do.

On homecoming night, the court walks with their parent or escort across the football field to be announced. They have to take time out of senator time to practice so they know when and where to walk.

Junior Mercy Byers said, “A few days before the homecoming game, we have rehearsal to make sure everyone’s name is right and stuff, and my dad walks me across the field.”

Walking on the field isn’t everybody’s motivation for running for homecoming court. Some girls just do it for the fun of it and have been running since freshman year. Senior candidates are motivated to finish their high school career with a win.

Rice said, “Homecoming court is something I’ve always wanted to do since freshman year, and after I made the court freshman and sophomore year, I was like, ‘Why not run the last two years?’ ”

Rice was motivated to run for homecoming court again because she won her freshman year, and because of the love and support she had from her school. Most people put posters up around the school, but some people just use social media instead.

Bryers said, “I made a poster on Instagram and asked people to vote for me in class.”

Getting called for Homecoming court can make someone feel amazing and grateful for hearing their name announced to the whole school. While winning isn’t everything, it can add some bliss to the high school experience.
