Local Coffee Shop Dedicates Special MLK Drinks To HBCUs

Tucked away in a small corner on Wall Triana Hwy is the local coffee shop Rocket City Coffee Company. Known for their specialty featured drinks and Hawaiin espresso, this coffee shop is the perfect place to spend spare time.

With Martin Luther King Jr. Day coming up Rocket City Coffee will be dedicating an entire week to donating half of the proceeds from their MLK inspired specialty drinks to the Historically Black College and University Foundation. The I Have a Dream frappe and MLK latte were last January’s most popular drinks. The MLK latte consists of mocha, white mocha and caramel flavor with vanilla bean steamed in the milk. Topped with whipped cream, caramel and mocha drizzle. The I Have a Dream frappe includes the same flavoring with blended chocolate chips and similar toppings. All proceeds from the sales were donated to the United Negro College Fund.

The woman behind these famous specialty drinks is manager, Ebonie Stewart. Every holiday she creates a specialty drink.

“I just wanted to come up with something to commemorate MLK and his memory and to put our name out there,” Stewart said. “We uphold some of the same things that he did. We are accepting of everyone no matter gender color ethnicity. We want everyone to come in and enjoy our coffee so I wanted something to welcome everyone in.”

The specialized MLK coffees continued to sell after the holiday which led to this year’s Unity latte. This year’s Unity latte features white mocha, mocha and butterscotch. Topped with whipped cream and caramel drizzle. The proceeds this year will be donated to the Historically Black College and University Foundation.

“When you think of the world today everything is so black and white. I wanted a drink to signify the world coming together because that is what I hope for,” Stewart said.
