Crimson Crier Wins Big at State Conference

March 2, 2017

This past weekend Sparkman High School’s Crimson Crier won big at Alabama Scholastic Press Association.

ASPA is an event where students form high schools within the state of Alabama compete to win awards in writing, photography and video. The writing portion of the competition has several sections including, sports, news, opinion, features and arts and entertainment.

The Crimson Crier staff left with 92 awards including two senior awards; the Bailey Thomson Editorial Writer Award which was won by Aliyah Thompson and the Rick Bragg Award for Feature Writing that was won by Emily Baucum.

“I was hoping I would win something the day before and I was really pessimistic.  I also felt relieved and surprised that I won an award,” Thompson said.

Sparkman High school’s web designers Christian White and Kaylyn Jones also won an award for Web Design.

“I was a little surprised at first, but I knew we were going to do well. We had a really great staff last year that left us a lot to work with and taught us well,” White said.

Sparkman High school’s literary magazine also made some big accomplishments. The literary magazine won the Superior award for the Silhouette and they came in second place for best cover design.

This year also turned out to be a little more meaningful to some of the seniors who will be leaving the Crimson Crier staff in May.

“As a junior, winning a senior award definitely made me feel like I should push myself and try harder,” Baucum said.
