Special Education unites under one speaker

A new tradition has recently begun in the Special Education wing called fun Friday. Fun Friday provides the students with a different and fun way of learning about important information and skills.

Every Friday a different speaker comes and talks to the students and spends time with each class. The idea of fun Friday came from Amy Alsup, one of the special education teachers.

“A different teacher is responsible for picking a speaker each week. The speakers vary from police officers, firefighters, store managers, people from the community and people who have interesting hobbies and skills. Fun Friday also involves the students interacting with different types of animals and completing fun crafts and activities,” Alsup said.

Before fun Friday was created, the teachers were responsible for having speakers to talk to their class, but after realizing that all the classes would benefit from a speaker the idea of fun Friday was born.

“In years past individual classes would have speakers come in and the other classes would sit in and listen. We then decided this year to start the formal program and so far it has been greatly benefiting the students,” Alsup said.

Fun Friday’s main purpose is to help the students gain skills that will benefit them in the future.

“The main reason we are doing fun Friday is to help the students learn social skills, safety awareness and community involvement. These skills are very important for the students to learn because they will use them for the rest of their lives,” Alsup said.
