Soccer’s answer for cancer

The soccer program organized their annual Soccer for a Cure event on Tuesday, April 15. Both boys’ and girls’ varsity and junior varsity teams played games against Bob Jones.

The goal of the event was to help the Robin Lanier Stewart Memorial Fund, a fund established by oncology physicians of the Huntsville Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Institute.

Diane Gordon helped out with the event this year.

“I coordinated the volunteers to take the donations, decorated the donation tables, helped with publicity and worked with Gameday and another set of volunteers to get the T-shirts ordered, sold and distributed.  I also communicated with Charlie Corbitt, founder of the Soccer for a Cure foundation,” Gordon said.

A total of $834 was raised. $633 of the total was donated from people coming to the games, and $201 was donated by Gameday Athletics through T-shirt sales.

Girls’ varsity player junior Beryl Kessio was pleased to help out with the cause.

“It’s an honor to take part in assisting those who are affected by cancer. Even though I only played in a game, I felt like I was a part of something larger,” Kessio said.

Although it was a cold and rainy day, money was raised. Gordon feels the event was a success.

“Donations and game attendance were down slightly from last year due to the cold weather, but I still feel like it went well,” Gordon said.
