Coleman Talks College Football: Week 3 & 4

The third week of the college football season ends as a week of expected favorites winning. But this week was not without upsets throughout the top 25 teams.

These upsets involved the teams just outside the top 10, with maybe the most surprising upset found in the matchup between the #11 Michigan State Spartans and the unranked Washington Huskies. The Spartans traveled to Husky Stadium for the Saturday game for their first challenge after starting the season 2-0. But they were unable to overcome the Huskies thanks to the performance of quarterback Michael Penix Jr. who threw 397 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Another upset inside from the top 15 this past week came between the #12 BYU Cougars and #25 Oregon Ducks. Both teams entered the game following home wins, with the Cougars’ win coming against the formerly #9 ranked Baylor Bears. Their good fortune would not continue against the Ducks and Bo Nix, with the Oregon quarterback credited with 5 touchdowns on the day.

The third upset came in one of the most anticipated games of the weekend between the #13 Miami Hurricanes and the #24 Texas A&M Aggies. The Aggies looked to right wrongs against the Hurricanes after the home upset they suffered against Appalachian State in week 2. Statements had been made by Aggies Head Coach Jimbo Fisher on the importance of “bouncing back” after that defeat and the Aggies were able to complete that with a 17-9 victory over the Hurricanes.

Top 3 Games to Watch for Week 4

  • #11 Tennessee Volunteers vs. #20 Florida Gators

The #20 Florida Gators travel to Neyland Stadium on Sunday for one of the marquee matchups in the SEC East. The Volunteers welcome the Gators for their first conference game of the season hoping to fulfill the expectations that have been placed on them for this season. Tennessee stands as -10.5 point favorites heading into the game but that spread may be tight if Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson is able to put up a similar performance as from the win against Utah earlier in the season.

  • #10 Arkansas Razorbacks vs. #23 Texas A&M Aggies

The Razorbacks and Aggies meet for a neutral site game at AT&T Stadium on Saturday in a game that could define both teams’ conference hopes early in the season. The Razorbacks enter the game 3-0 on the season following a tight home win against Missouri State and the Aggies enter riding their week 3 upset of the Miami Hurricanes at Kyle Field. Despite Arkansas’s 3-0 start, the Aggies at -2 point favorites heading into the tightly contested matchup.

  • #5 Clemson Tigers @ #21 Wake Forest Demon Deacons

The Clemson Tigers enter the game as a -7 point favorite over Wake Forest with hopes that their quarterback DJ Uiagalelei can continue his good performances for their hopes of reclaiming the ACC Conference title this season. Wake Forest hopes to bring an upset to their ACC opponent behind quarterback Sam Hartman who aims to bring the Demon Deacons back to the ACC Championship game after their defeat last to the Pittsburgh Panthers.
