Football Season Ends With Hope For Next Fall
November 27, 2018
Dreams of making the playoffs came to end when the football team lost to the Florence Falcons in the ninth game of the season. Despite this, the team had some highlights that show continued promise for the program.
The storm began the season with a win over Athens High 30-21. The team went on to defeat Hazel Green 14-7, Gadsden 21-9, Buckhorn 35-0 and Grissom 17-13. They suffered their first loss in their fifth game of the season against Huntsville High, losing by nine points. The team ended the season 5-6.
Sophomore Karon White made an impression on the defensive side of the ball. He had 72 tackles on the season with an average of 12 for a loss of yards.
“More work and dedication and more time was put into the game. More time trying to better myself and get closer as a team” White said.
The offense was a blend of passing and rushing. Junior Travion Rupert rushed for 428 yards behind senior Chris Joiner who garnered 789 yards. Rupert averaged around 5-yards a carry.
“When I’m in the weight room I’m working out hard lifting weights and stuff,” Joiner said.
With the helmets and pads hung up for the winter, the team will begin focusing on weightlifting and conditioning during the off-season.
