Farewell Of Robert Downey Jr Will Leave Hole In Marvel Cinematic Universe

April 10, 2019

Iron Man is a face that everyone knows. Everyone, even people who do not like the world of superheros and villians know the face of Robert Downey Jr. He is an iconic figure that is an essential piece of everything that is the Marvel Universe. And after April 26, he may no longer be a part of it.

Downey Jr has played the iconic character of Iron Man for 11 years now, ever since the release of the first Iron Man movie in 2008. The movie was a smash hit and grossed $585.2 million worldwide, with Downey Jr making $500,000. In 2018, Downey Jr was the third highest-paid actor in the world, bringing in a salary of $81 million, only underneath Dwayne Johnson and George Clooney. Prior to the April 26 release of Avengers: Endgame, Robert Downey Jr will have made an estimated $200 million with Marvel. Endgame is expected to make a whopping $750-$800 million opening weekend, with Robert Downey Jr getting paid an estimated $10 million in salary for the movie. So, the man obviously has enough money to retire and live the rest of his life comfortably. And since his contract with Marvel will end after the release of Endgame, he is at full leisure to do so. However, in doing so many fans will be broken-hearted.

Iron Man has become an iconic part of everything that is Marvel. In more recent movies, such as Spiderman: Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War, Tony Stark has become a father-figure to young Peter Parker, who was left without one in his life when his parents were killed in a plane crash. Tears were streaming in theatres during the scene in Infinity War when Spiderman disintegrated into dust while Stark was holding him. However, in the trailer for Endgame, things do not look good for the superhero. He is seen drifting through space, recording his final message for his fiancée, Pepper Potts. Fans can hope this does not mean the end for the man behind the iron mask, but things do not appear to be looking up any time soon. But, if there is one thing fans have learned about Marvel it is that they always find a way to keep characters alive if they want them to be.

While no one lives forever, we always hope that our favorite characters do. Sadly, everything comes to an end. If this is the end of Downey Jr’s career in the Marvel universe, all of the fans know one thing for sure: Iron Man will not go quietly. While his presence will be sorely missed by millions, we will always have the countless hours of laughs and cries he has given us in all of his past movies, which is worth the world.
