Day of love, the pros and cons

Students express their views on Valentines Day

February 11, 2016

Often we view Valentine’s Day as a day filled with red roses, expensive dinners and lots of chocolate. Recently it seems the view has shifted in some ways. We now look at Valentine’s Day as a day that glorifies singles and overlooks the tradition of purchasing expensive gifts for your bae.

Stores are beginning to appeal to the single population by doing promotions on Valentine’s Day that cater to only them. Social media has boosted this idea by advertising places like Hooters, that is having an Ex’s night; if you bring a picture of your ex and shred it up in front of the staff, you can buy 10 wings and get 10 free. Who knows, you might even find “the one” while drowning your sorrows in wings together.

No worries, businesses did not forget about the couples either. Valentine’s Day has quite the reputation of being an expensive holiday. Waffle House is trying to combat that stereotype by taking reservations for candlelit dinners. Coming from the view of a person in a relationship, this is a nice alternative to a formal dinner setting. The best part would be that you do not have to be decked out in the finest clothing or be on your A-game. You could really let loose and have a fun night with your significant other.

On the bright side for everyone, stores have realized the Valentine’s Day candy rush truly begins on Feb. 15th. A lot of supermarkets have already started advertising 50 to 75 percent off all candy for the 15th. I mean, who does not want a big heart shaped box of chocolates?

Best places to buy:

  • Target
  • Walmart
  • Walgreens
  • CVS
  • Krogers

In all honesty, this day should be all about love, even if it is just love for Netflix, a best friend or ice cream. This day has developed over time to fit multiple views of love. As humans, we love to give and receive love. I would say there is no way this holiday will go away, at least not anytime soon.
