Medical Academy Students Plan for Internships

For some students, the medical field is their dream. At our school, there are extensive opportunities given to fulfill that dream.

Going to school to become a doctor or other health specialist can be a very costly and timely thing.  There are opportunities here to see if experiment in this field without spending the money on college classes.  One of these opportunities is an internship through our medical academy program for senior Bella Powell, this program has opened up multiple opportunities.

“This is important to me because I want to go into the medical field, and this program allows me to learn information and skills that I will need to know. It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it because it is preparing me for nursing school,” Powell said.

In order to have an internship through our medical academy class, there is a process you have to go through. You must meet all of the qualifications to be accepted into the program, along with two required courses before taking the internship course.

“They must pass all benchmark tests in the Foundations and Therapeutics classes.  These tests cover safety, infection control, confidentiality, CPR, etc. They must certify in CPR and First Aid. They must also perform required skills such as standard precautions, vital sign measurement, isolation precautions, etc at a 90% competency level to move on.  They must also have good attendance and behavior in class,” Teacher Angela Holland said.

When students go to the hospital to do their internships they are given assignments just as if they were in class. They have the opportunity to go to pretty much any department they would be interested in.

“While at the hospitals, they can observe or perform entry level skills that they have checked off on in lab.  They get to go into ER, ICU’s, X-ray, pretty much all of the departments you would find in a hospital,” Holland said.

For some students, they may be unsure if they want to choose a path in the medical field as a career.  Our medical academy class has shown students if this is what they want to do or not.

“Without a doubt, I want to go into the medical field. Right now, I’m deciding if I want to go into nursing or PA, but since I started the medical academy program, I’ve been more drawn to the medical field,” Powell said.
