HOSA to Vie for Top Spot in National Competition

At the most recent HOSA state competition in Montgomery, medical academy students competed in a variety of events of their choosing. Of those competitors, 18 placed in the top three of their event, qualifying them to vie for first place in the national competition in June.

To be able to achieve a feat such as this, these competitors put hours of studying and practice of skills to prepare for the competition they knew they would face at state levels.

“I prepared for competitions by taking all the powerpoints that were on the websites for my specific skill, which was CERT. I went through every powerpoint and made sheets of questions and answers so i could go through them and study as if they were flashcards,” junior Bella Rector said. “Then my partner Cori Myers made a pretest with all the questions on it so we could study that. Finally, we studied all the skills that were given to us on the CERT website.”

Medical academy advisor, Angela Holland, tries her best to prepare all of her students before their competition. However, taking 72 students to state makes it difficult to make sure they are all prepared.

“My expectations were high going into competitions. My feelings toward the outcome would be bitter-sweet,” Holland said. “We do a lot of preparation in the classroom, but having 72 students to try and get one-on-one with is very difficult, [but] I am proud of my students who placed high enough to qualify for nationals.”

Students who made it to nationals have until June to perfect their craft in their events. Though they have a long road of preparation ahead, all these competitors are still thrilled about their success at state.
“This is my second year making it to nationals, so it feels amazing to have won a medal for something that you worked really hard for and for something you truly care about,” senior Vashti Convers said. “My event was prepared speaking, and the theme was leadership, service and engagement. I worked on it with Mrs. Holland since November. After I finished writing it, I took it to all of my classes and practiced over and over until I got it perfect. Mrs. Holland has motivated me the most. She’s a very competitive woman and she puts that drive in us that makes us want to work harder to impress her”
