Make a Wish, Sadie Hawkins

February 2, 2017

With the upcoming Sadie Hawkins Dance profits going towards the Make-A-Wish Foundation, it is important to know just what exactly you’re doing by attending the charitable event. The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a program that works to grant the wishes of children suffering from terminal illnesses.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation works to make the dreams of children come true. The idea started in the year 1980 when a seven-year-old boy named Chris Greicius was diagnosed with leukemia. Greicius wanted nothing more than to be a police officer and the people in his community made it happen. Greicius was able to live his dream before he passed on May 3, 1980.

This is how the Make-A-Wish Foundation was born. Community donations and profits for the organization go towards children like Greicius. Close to 16,000 children are diagnosed with cancer or another terminal illness each year. These children are often given a timeline on their life and are given a short time to do what most people have a lifetime to do.

This is exactly why it is crucial to donate and give to organizations such as Make-A-Wish. These children do not have the ability to go get a job one day and pay for a trip to Disneyland. They are not able to become what they always dreamed of doing “when they grow up.” Their parents are too busy worried about their children and paying for medications and hospital visits to save up for big trips across the globe.

It is up to the community and those surrounding the children, parents and doctors to do their part. Allow these children to take advantage of their once in a lifetime opportunity like we all will. Let them live out the rest of their lives to the fullest like we are able to do in our lives.

These young spirits are being held down by an illness that is not their fault or their doing so why should they live any less of a life than the rest of us? This is the reason to give to organizations such as Make-A-Wish. By donating, you are helping a child reach their top bucket list wish, which something we all have the right to do.
