The wrestling team has hit the ground running with their first few meets of the season. Tuesday’s quad meet earned the team two wins and a single loss.

Lee, Buckhorn B and Hartselle put in appearances at the quad meet and the teams faced off on the mats, throwing down with a high average of pins. Against Lee, the team scored three pins and won two matches besides for a winning score of 37-30. Buckhorn B proved a hit-or-miss team: all five matches won against Buckhorn were pins, ending with a final team score of 42-18. Hartselle managed to turn the tables with four pins and an ending score of 30-42.

The wrestling team has been doing considerably well for its reduced player numbers. Several wrestlers have been unable to participate due to injuries and the subsequent lack of players has resulted in forfeits in the varsity bracket. Forfeits are considered wins for the other team and result in the same number of points as a pin, requiring a certain number of wins just to break even. The team hopes to be back at full strength by January.

“We are just going to take it one match at a time. The guys have a lot of good things going for them this year,” coach Zac Hightower said.

Meanwhile the junior varsity wrestlers competing in exhibition have consistently been successful. Seventh grader Isaiah Smith nearly scored his first pin Tuesday to wild cheers and applause by spectators.

“As the littlest guy on the team, he’s got a lot of work ahead of him but Isaiah’s stepping up and getting it done,” Hightower said.
