Coach William Thomas has been winning every school fundraiser so far this year, but now his winning streak has fallen.

The recent canned food drive sponsored by Student Government Association had a great outcome of over 7,000 cans and ramen raised. The grand winner of the food drive was English teacher Crystal Hodgens with 980 cans. Other teachers recognized for bringing in over 100 cans as well as were top winners, including Teresa Hodge and JROTC, who raised over 800 cans, and Thomas, who raised over 500 cans.

“This is fantastic. I am so proud of our giving and generous spirit at Sparkman. You should all be proud of yourselves and your students. Thank you so much for your help,” SGA sponsor Katherine Neis said.

The Can Wars was battled out by Thomas and Hodge for a change of pace. Both teachers had very interesting strategies, such as hiding their cans from each other, bribing students with free homework and test grades and not telling SGA their can totals, just in case.  There was an enormous amount of ramen noodles, a winner for both teachers had it not been for the six to one limit placed. In the end however, Thomas was beaten by Hodge by 316 cans.

“I am proud of my students for donating so many cans and ramen. They are the best kids I have,” Hodge said.

Thomas is slightly disappointed in losing, but is not taking it personal or letting this bring him down. He has a new goal and plan for next year’s food drive, which includes no ramen collections, and he is more determined than ever to win all the upcoming events. He found Hodge as good competition and wishes that there were more people like her in the world.

“It is all for a good cause, it gets the kids all fired up and it helps a lot of people who need this food,” Thomas said.
