Participants gather to join in the Walk 4 Water.

Last Saturday 230 people showed up to express their support for Walk 4 Water. This event was organized by coach Ben Stevenson and the varsity football team. The goal for this event was to raise money to install water wells in places where clean water is not available.

Walk 4 Water is a non-profit Christian organization that is run through Healing Hands International. Last year the team raised enough money to put a well in India. This year $2,700 was raised, sadly only a fraction of the $7,000 goal.

Participants walked four miles which represents the four miles women and children have to walk every day to reach drinking water which may be contaminated, causing death and disease. Participants chanted the motto, “We walk so they don’t have to!” as they walked around the field.

“It’s really a tragedy that we have alienated the struggles of others. We don’t think about water as a luxury, but we should,” senior Erin Stender said. “The walk really shined a light on the desperation these people face.”

The money raised goes straight to well drilling in developing countries. It brings clean water sources closer to the people, which alleviates the gruelling walk and deadly water borne disease.
