While many students were completing last-minute homework assignments or catching up on sleep at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 28, others met at the school’s flag pole to praise and worship God.
See You at The Pole is an international day of student prayer held annually on the fourth Wednesday of September. Beginning as a challenge toTexasstudents in 1990, See You at The Pole has erupted into an event attended by more than three million students at schools in more than 20 countries worldwide. Organized by First Priority, Sparkman’s version of the event drew dozens of students to sing, pray, and worship together as a school.
“My favorite part is the worship. I think it’s definitely easier for people to not be afraid to glorify God at SYATP because it’s such a big event. The worship time is not only time to sing and praise, but also to be able to talk to God through the songs,” junior Julia Alton Tubbs said.
The event opened with students, led by junior Sydney McGuire, singing “Happy Day,” and then splitting off into smaller groups to pray with one another. Many students joined the worship as they stepped off their buses, pausing only to discard their backpacks as they were welcomed into the prayer circles.
“Since I love to sing, I obviously loved the worship,” McGuire said, “The prayer time was awesome. Just being able to come together and lift up our school was amazing.”
See You at The Pole closed with the song “How Great Is Our God” and a final prayer. Students were encouraged to continue to spread their faith throughout the school day.
“It feels awesome to be able to share God’s love and praise with other students. There was definitely a mix of people at the event, which is so cool because I feel like I’m helping to reach many people,” Tubbs said, “It’s great when, after sharing God’s love, someone else wants to share it too. It’s like a ripple effect.”
