Top 10 Movies of 2017

January 12, 2017

In the world of movies, 2016 was a hit. Captain America, Moana, Deadpool, Rogue One, Batman v. Superman and Finding Dory are just a few of the phenomenal movies that came out throughout 2016. But 2017 has great movies in store for us too. Here is a list of the “Top 10 most anticipated movies of 2017.”

10. JUMANJI

Date: Dec 22, 2017

Trailer: No Trailer Yet

Now most people are thinking, “Are you kidding me? Why is this on the top 10?” “I didn’t know they were making another one.” “Really, there are so many better movies that will come out this year.” “It will never be as good as the 1995 one.” Yes, I do understand that but the 1995 one was an adventure that I remember watching when I was younger. You could compare this to the very first Star Wars: you loved the first ones so years later, you’re excited to see that it is back; not to replace but continue. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Nick Jonas and Karen Gillian are the stars of this movie. The movie is supposed to be a “spiritual” continuation of the 1995 version and will be paying tribute to the late Robin Williams.

9. LOGAN

Date: March 3, 2017

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Div0iP65aZo

In the year 2000, the very first X-Men came to theaters. In it, Hugh Jackman starred as Logan/ Wolverine and Patrick Stewart starred as Charles Xavier/ Professor X.  Over the years, many more X-men movies have come out, but remarkably, these two have been able to stay as these characters. So 17 years later, Jackman and Stewart are deciding to retire from there longtime role of superheroes for one final movie. The movie “Logan” is different from the previous X-men/ Wolverine movies because it is based off of the “Old Man Logan” comics. This makes it more special because it shows he is getting old and will feel like the proper send off for Jackman and Stewart. Jackman wanted to make this movie even more different than his previous ones by making “Logan” rated R. To do so, Jackman was willing to take a pay cut just to make this movie R. “I’m really, really proud of this movie. I was really keen that I didn’t leave the party feeling like I could dance more. I think I’m pretty danced out, and I had a great time. It’s been an unbelievable ride, but it feels right,” Hugh Jackman says about retiring from the role.

8. KONG: SKULL ISLAND

Date: March 10, 2017

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9y6oPka3us

Kong: Skull Island will be coming to theaters March 10. It is set to be in the same world as the 2013 “Godzilla” movie which will eventually lead to the 2020 movie, “King Kong vs. Godzilla.” From the start, this movie has had a killer cast: Brie Larson, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, John C. Reilly.  This action movie just from the trailer has shown us the power of King Kong. They show Kong in there just going to town, throwing down helicopters, being on fire while still fighting, and even his face sticking out in the middle of an explosion. The trailer shows us that there will be some humor in the movie but it also shows the danger that will be presented. The trailer speaks for itself on why this is on my list of most anticipated movies.

7. THOR RAGNAROK

Date: Nov. 3, 2017

Trailer: No Trailer Yet

Thor Ragnarok (Thor 3) will be the seventeenth movie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A big reason I am excited to see this is the superheroes. Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk will be in the movie.
In the after credit scene of Doctor Strange, Thor and Strange are talking. Thor says they are looking for Odin (Thor’s father) in New York and Loki is there to help too, and the last line is Strange standing up and saying “Let me help you.” *jaw drops to the floor* NO FREAKIN WAY! I nearly peed my pants when he said that. Walt Disney revealed its first preview of the Thor movie which included a synopsis of the movie. It said, “In Marvel Studios’ ‘Thor: Ragnarok,’ Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok – the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization – at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger – the Incredible Hulk!” I can’t wait to see Doctor Strange, Thor and Hulk all back and to see how Strange interacts with the Avengers.

6. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALE

Date: May 26, 2017

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xo3af_6_Jk

The fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie will be titled, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.” Johnny Depp will be returning back to his role as the iconic Jack Sparrow. But not only is Johnny Depp returning, a chunk of the stars from the original Pirates of the Caribbean are returning including Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa, Orlando Bloom as Will Turner and Kevin McNally as Mr.  Gibbs. Another Hollywood star, Javier Bardem, will be introduced to the cast as Captain Salazar. The cast alone is enough to make me excited for this movie. But not only the that, the teaser trailer has made me very excited. The way the trailer is styled makes it have that mood that was similar to the first one. It has that dark tone with pirates killing the British soldiers but also it has the jokes that were in the first one. Hopefully it turns out better than its’ predecessor.

5. WONDER WOMAN

Date: June 2, 2017

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Q8fG0TtVAY

In 2016, “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” was released, marking the second movie to be apart of the DC Extended Universe. In the movie, Wonder Woman was brought to life from the comics.Gal Gadot was the actress who portrayed Wonder Woman and nailed it on the spot. Now, a year later, Gadot is back as the character in the first ever “Wonder Woman” movie. Lots of people criticized “Batman v. Superman” for being to dull/ lack of color. Just from the trailers alone, the colors have made this movie look a lot better. In the trailer, there is a scene where Wonder Woman is standing on a cliff, looking out into the ocean and the colors are very vivid making the scene pop. Even the costume she is wearing has added more color so the red, gold, and blue stand out more. This movie also takes place during the time frame of World War I which will be fun to see how they tie in WWI with superheros. And also, Gal Gadot is hot so what can I say.

4.Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Date: May 5, 2017

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dW1BIid8Osg

The first Guardians of the Galaxy was a major success across the globe. It is considered one of the best Marvel movies acquiring a total of $774,176,600, making it the fifth highest grossing movie apart of the MCU. It is the ninth highest grossing movie of all the Marvel movies (according to http://moneynation.com/much-money-every-marvel-movie-made/ ). The soundtrack and the humor of the first one are the reasons on why I consider that movie to be ONE of my favorite movies. The soundtrack from the first one were a combination of songs from 1967-1979 which make it very nice for the older crowds to enjoy but also to “culture” the younger crowd. The humor in the movie is all perfectly timed. In the second one, the cast will be returning. The trailers have already shown us a glimpse of some of the humor in it as well as some of the action scenes. Throughout the MCU, the movies have a slight gray tone to it in color. In this movie, a different camera is being used which will hopefully make the colors stand out more.  The events in this movie will be a factor that leads into the 2018, “Avengers Infinity War.” The movie will continue its theme from the last one with more songs from the 70’s. Also Baby Groot is just the coolest, most adorable thing.

3. SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

Date: July 7, 2017

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9DwoQ7HWvI

Throughout the last two decades, there have been three on-screen versions of the fan-favorite superhero, “Spider-Man.” From 2002-2007, Tobey Maguire played the character. Then in 2012, Sony Pictures rebooted the hero in “The Amazing Spider-Man” starring Andrew Garfield. Two years later, they released a second one, but received so much backlash from critics and fans, that further movies that were planned were cancelled. In 2016, Marvel released the movie, “Captain America: Civil War.” There had been rumors on whether or not Spider-Man would join the MCU and become an Avenger. In the first trailer, there was no sign of him. But in the last 10 seconds of the second trailer, Tony Stark yells “UNDEROOS!” Then a web comes out of nowhere, taking Captain America’s shield away from him. Then doing a flip and landing on a car, Spider-Man looks up at the camera and says, “Hey everyone.” Fans all over social media and myself included FLIPPED OUT! I remember watching it in class with a friend of mine and it took every nerve in our body to not scream out loud with joy. We could believe that he was finally in going to being in the Marvel movies. When the movie came out, I went and saw it opening day. For the first hour and 15 minutes, there is no sign or mention of him. But then it changes scenes and he comes on. The thing I liked about him in it was because he was already Spider-Man. We didn’t have to watch Uncle Ben die again or him get bitten by the spider for the third time. Its like, “yes we know the story, let’s get onto the spidey part.” Once he went into the fight scene, it was everything that it was meant to be. He was meant for the role of Spider-Man. This movie takes place after the events of “Civil War.” So he has all his suits and even Tony Stark will be a main character in this movie. Oh and Michael Keaton will be portraying the main villain, Vulture. First he is saving Gotham as Batman and now is terrorizing Manhattan as Vulture. By the looks of the trailer, Keaton’s Vulture is going to be one hard-core character. Now I could go on and on about how excited I am for this movie but we don’t have all day but there are still other movies on this list so let’s continue.

2.STAR WARS EPISODE VIII

Date: Dec. 15, 2017

Trailer: No Trailer Yet

In 2015, the Force Awakens came to theaters and the trailers probably made me the most hype I have ever been for a movie. After seeing it in theaters, I felt disappointed and let down. There was so much potential for it, but I have grown to accept it. In 2016, Rogue One came to theaters and in my words, “made up for how bad Force Awakens was.” Now this year, another Star Wars is coming out and it will be the sequel to the Force Awakens. No trailers have been dropped so there is not much information about this movie but what we do know is that after the events of Force Awakens, Rey is now going to continue her training with Luke Skywalker, Poe, Finn and Leia. John Williams will step back into action to create the soundtrack for this movie. He is responsible for creating the iconic Star Wars theme and all the music in the originals and prequels. A friend pointed out to me:

  1. Star Wars 1: Palpatine was the “Phantom Menace”
  2. Star Wars 2: The Battle of Geonosis was the “Attack of the Clones”
  3. Star Wars 3: Order 66 was the “Revenge of the Sith”
  4. Star Wars 4: Luke Skywalker was the “New Hope”
  5. Star Wars 5: The Battle of Hoth was the “Empire Striking Back”
  6. Star Wars 6: Darth Vader was the “Jedi who Returned”
  7. Star Wars 7: Rey discovering her force-sensitivity was the “Awakening of the Force”
  8. Star Wars 8: What is to come???

Also this movie is more anticipated for me because I want to see how they handle the passing of the princess herself, Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher). Hopefully this movie is a great tribute to her.

Oh and its Star Wars, who wouldn’t be excited.

1. JUSTICE LEAGUE

Date: Nov. 17, 2017

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIHH5-HVS9o

After getting TONS of hate on Rotten Tomatoes and fans for the movies “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad,” most people are skeptical about this movie. I on the other hand, actually appreciated “Batman v. Superman” very much. It was great to see Batman back in the big screen and Ben Affleck nailed it as Bruce Wayne. Henry Cavill’s Superman was fantastic just as he was in Man of Steel. The thing I liked most about that movie was the music in it. It is one of the things DC Comics movies excell at that Marvel movies fail to do. They create theme music for their characters so whenever that character is on the screen, the theme is supposed to play. Marvel creates new themes for their characters in every new movie which makes it inconsistent and forgettable music. The music is what drives a movie. If the characters are happy, there should be happy music. If there is a villain, there should be a villainous tone to the music. If the character is sad, there should be sad music. When Superman died in BvS, the music was what almost drove me to tears, also with the fact that Superman sacrificed himself to save everyone even when they hated him. Now that Justice League is coming out, hopefully they bring that power they had in that movie. Also Aquaman is freaking shredded. He probably never leaves the gym. This movie will introduce Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg, and there is a hint that Green Lantern might show up. Superman is said to return so I wonder how they will set that up. Hopefully they focus on the story so that it will make sense. And as long as Warner Brothers doesn’t butcher the movie like they did to “Batman v Superman,” this movie could turn out pretty freaking awesome.

Oh and Gal Gadot is still hot.
